Unknown Worlds, the creator of survival hit Subnautica, has announced Moonbreaker, a digital tabletop strategy game in the mould of Warhammer 40,000 – right down to being able to paint your units.

Revealed at Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase, the game is due to release into PC and Mac Early Access on September 29, and will see players collecting units, building rosters, painting models, and bringing them into turn-based battles.

The hook to all this is that you can even paint your miniatures, just as you would in a physical tabletop game. Options look to be plentiful, with dozens of shades, and multiple brush types to simulate real world painting. If you don't want to paint, you can use colour schemes created by professional miniature painters.

The universe has been co-created with Mistborn and Wheel of Time novelist Brandon Sanderson - who previously said he'd love to work on a game like Elden Ring. "Players will battle in various locations across the Reaches – a tiny solar system with moons held in orbit by a scarce resource called Cinder," reads a press release. "Players will also be able to learn more about the world of Moonbreaker and its characters through upcoming audio dramas that will release closer to its Early Access launch."

The Early Access version will include over 50 units to collect and combine for your rosters.

Subnautica became a much-loved survival experience after its release in 2018. In our 9.1/10 review, we said, "Not since Minecraft have I fallen so easily in love with an open-world survival craft-em-up, and in a lot of ways, including the gripping story, developer Unknown Worlds has done even better."
