A TV series based on the Harry Potter books was officially announced today for Max, Warner Bros.' newly announced streaming platform.

During the Warner Bros. Discovery streaming call today, it was revealed that the series will be a "faithful adaptation" of the novels. A new cast will be playing the characters, and the series has been given a massive 10-year commitment. It's worth noting, however, that 10 years doesn't necessarily mean 10 seasons - just that the series will play out over the course of a decade.

JK Rowling will be serving as executive producer.

The series has been rumored and reported on for some time, but this marks Warner Bros.' first official confirmation of its existence. A release and production start date have yet to be revealed, but it's safe to say those should be some time away, as development remains early.

Just earlier this month, a source confirmed to IGN that a series was in development, but that a deal had not yet closed. According to a Bloomberg report, the show is expected to follow each Harry Potter book one season at a time.

Warner Bros. has continued to attempt to cash in on Harry Potter, its most profitable franchise, and the shift from film to television isn't too surprising. While Hogwarts Legacy has sold well since its launch in February, its Fantastic Beasts films have seen diminishing returns, reportedly putting the remaining two planned movies in the series on pause.

The Harry Potter news was only one big announcement from today's streaming call, where a new Game of Thrones prequel and a The Conjuring TV series were also revealed.
